How do I use Turnitin?

Turnitin is a text matching tool that is used for some courses at UniSQ.
 
In order to understand the process, and interpret the reports from Turnitin, ICT Training has created an online self-paced course, that is free for all students.

Turnitin is a plagiarism checker and lecturers can choose between 2 different options when requesting students check their assignments for plagiarism.

You will use only 1 of either of the choices below,.  The method that you use, will depend on how your lecturer has set it up in your course.  

Note:  It is more common to use Turnitin from within the StudyDesk.  

Turnitin-within StudyDesk:  This is when the plagiarism checking is automatically done when you submit your assignment.  You may not see any reference to Turnitin until after the assignment is uploaded.
  • Turnitin-Website: This is when you are asked to visit the Turnitin website and submit your assignment for checking, obtain an Originality report and upload this report with your assignment via the StudyDesk.

Note: When submitting a file to Turnitin, the name of the file must not exceed 30 characters.


Within StudyDesk Assignment

To see how Turnitin works from within the StudyDesk assignment submission process, follow the instructions below, 

Instructions:

  1. Log into StudyDesk and Navigate to your course
  2. Locate and click on the Assignment link
  3. Click on the Add Submission button
  4. Upload the assignment into the files area
  5. Click on Save changes 
  6. If this is the first time you have used Turnitin, you will see an important announcement which you will need to activate.   You need to click on the link in the announcement to accept the Turnitin User Agreement.  You will not be able to continue the upload of your assignment until you activate this link
  7. Click on the link in the Announcement to accept the Turnitin User Agreement
  8. Read the terms and conditions and  if you agree, click on the I agree - Continue button
  9. There will be a confirmation message, advising that your submission as been uploaded to Turnitin
  10. A Turnitin submission ID number will be displayed

Special Note

  • It may take up to 24 hours for a report to be issued from Turnitin
  • When the assignment has been checked, you will see a notice in the Files submission area.
  • The percentage mark given indicates the amount of text matched against the Turnitin Database.  It is merely an indicator that should always be reviewed to identify where Turnitin have picked up potential plagiarism.
  •  You may have the option to edit submission or the option to submit assignment , this is determined by your lecturer.
  • Once you submit assignment you are no longer able to edit it.

If checking your assignment via the Turnitin website, see the information  below

  1. Create a Turnitin account
  2. Enrol into a class
  3. Submit your assignment to Turnitin 
  4. Download the Originality report from Turnitin 
  5. Submit the assignment in StudyDesk with the Originality report
